Teachers' notes
Sustainability is one of the Cross Curriculum Priorities identified in the Australian Curriculum and incorporated into the new NSW syllabi. This means that the topic of sustainability needs to be incorporated into all the Phase 1 subjects for implementation in 2014 (Maths, English, History and Science), and that as the new syllabi are developed for the remaining subjects sustainability will also need to be incorporated into teaching. For this project the main subjects that are addressed are Science, Geography, Timber, Metal, Drama and Technology.
Students will need to complete small sections of the project in each BTM lesson and submit them for marking. This is to ensure that groups are making progress throughout the term and don't leave everything until the last minute. In the initial weeks of Term 4, the milestones the groups will have to reach will be fairly small and there will be some sections of work in those first few sessions that will be teacher-led. It is in these weeks that students will develop the basic knowledge and skills required for the project (the "need to know" information). Without completing these basic steps it will be difficult for the groups to move forward.
As the term progresses, groups will develop their ideas and increasingly work by developing their own direction, only calling on the teacher if there is a problem or a gap in their knowledge. Ideally in the last few sessions teachers should facilitate the students solving their own problems or finding out information rather than delivering a direct answer. Obviously if there are groups that are struggling, then please provide the support you think is required.
Students have been divided into groups across classes to allow students the opportunity to work with peers with differing abilities, social skills and expertise. Staff will be emailed a list of groups. In most cases, you will be working with the same groups over the term. This type of grouping will mean that you won't be working with your normal BTM class, but a mix of students from a number of classes, still with a maximum of 30.
The following spaces have been booked and are available during BTM time: D1,D2, D3, H24, K211 and the Library. Further advice will be given by email regarding which teachers and students will be in which rooms.
The basic program will run as follows:
Week 1: Year meeting including introduction of the project
Week 3, Wed 22 October: Youth Eco Summit - Homebush Bay
Week 3: Working in groups, research techniques, sources and plagiarism
Week 5: Evaluating subject content and working on the project
Week 7: Project creation
Week 9: Project creation
Week 10: Presentation of projects. This will not be done in BTM time.
